Why this song wasn’t included on Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not is something I’ll never know. It’s one of my favorite AM tracks by far, and tells one of leader Alex Turner’s personal stories. The song’s transition from third person to first is simply brilliant in how well it’s done, and it’s the best example I can think of in that practice.
The song also has one of my favorite lines ever in it:
“But she’s not nice
She’s pretty fucking far from nice
She’s looking at you funny
Rarely looking at you twice”
The way he spits it out combined with the jaggedness going from verse to chorus makes this an incredibly interesting listen and a damn good song. Enjoy!
The Monkeys are currently working on their 4th LP, so let’s hope it’s not as polarizing as their 3rd…
